recycling programsImagine 15 paper grocery bags filled with plastic trash on every single yard of shoreline in the world- that’s how much land-based plastic trash ended up in the world’s oceans in just one year! The human race generates at least 3.5 million tons of plastic and other solid waste a day, 10 times the amount a century ago, according to World Bank researchers. The U.S. is the leading trash producing country in the world, with a whopping 250 million tons a year.
Hope Town Zero Waste is focused on not only reducing the amount of waste we produce, but finding ways to upcycle what we can't eliminate. Through partnerships and educational resources, we are teaching all generations to be mindful of the amount of trash they generate and think about where that goes. |
PRECIOUS PLASTICSOur Precious Plastic machines divert plastic from our waste stream and turns it into new products and resources. The machines chip used single use plastic and turn it into filament that can then be extruded (3D printed) into something new.
Our goals for the Precious Plastics Program are to: 1. Divert plastics from our waste stream into new products and resources so they are not shipped and burned at the dump on the mainland (climate change mitigation). 2. To upskill and train youth and adults on new 3D printing technologies in Abaco. 3. To sell products at local stores made from the Precious Plastics machines to highlight issues on plastic pollution and show innovative ways to divert the plastics that are being generated (i.e., cups, coasters and baggage clips). 4. To apply the profits from the sale of the Precious Plastics products to support current Hope Town Zero Waste Programs and develop new programs for the island. 5. To encourage new microeconomic opportunities on the island for entrepreneurs interested in starting new business ventures for 3D printing with plastics (i.e., chairs and benches). 6. To encourage other communities and islands in the Bahamas to divert plastics through new innovative technologies like Precious Plastics machines.
